Connecting people with place

Lincoln - 15 July 2010

About the conference

Two issues inspire this event:
  • the imperative to move towards greater community engagement
  • the value of local distinctiveness – to residents, visitors and investors
Successful places improve our quality of life, they provide a sense of local distinctiveness and identity for residents and visitors, and they attract investment. Whilst the heritage and planning sectors continue to develop the tools to understand and characterise our settlements and landscapes, we are only beginning to take the information out, going beyond dissemination, to actively connect people with places. As well as engaging with people about what we know, part of the process is looking at the interactive ways in which we can understand how people perceive places themselves. New and innovative methods of communicating information are offering new opportunities for helping people engage with their inherited environment.

Heritage Connect
Heritage Connect is a new website launched by the City of Lincoln Council, English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund. The website, accessible by PC and smartphone, provides professionals, residents and visitors with information about the inherited environment of 108 places in Lincoln. Together these places, or ‘Character Areas’, cover the entire Lincoln Authority area, so wherever you are in the City you can find out about the historical development, urban form, and open spaces of the place you are in.

This conference will carry CPD certification
