Learning from Place

Thursday 22 October: 2 - 4.30pm

The Academy of Urbanism seminar will be run by Professor John Worthington and Professor Sarah Chaplin and will include the launch of the Academy's new Starter pack for UniverCities. The Academy of Urbanism is a knowledge transfer organisation, and the Learning from Place programme is at the heart of all that we do. Come and share the learning to date on three of the key programmes of The Academy.

This is a participative session and we welcome your input:

Part One: The Awards Programme - we have just completed assessments for the 4th year of The Urbanism Awards. Learn how the Academy assesses successful places and what we can learn from this that will help us to replicate success elsewhere.

Part Two: The UniverCities Programme Share experiences of how these dynamic partnerships between towns and cities and their academic institutions and practitioners can create mutual benefits to all. Prof Chaplin will introduce the new Starter pack for creating a UniverCity. This year The Academy of Urbanism is funded by SEEDA to develop 3 pilot UniverCities in the South East, at Brighton and Hove, Medway and Portsmouth. Prof Chaplin, with participation from the pilot towns, will share the learning to date. We will also reflect on the success of other UniverCities that are becoming established.

Part Three: City X rays and their Application Prof John Worthington will lead a discussion on the evolution of City X Rays, and how developing tools that help us understand the DNA of places will aid effective transformation.

We hope that you will be able to join The Academy at Chichester, and that you will have time to stay for the whole conference, or perhaps for the Thursday night dinner. The HTF Annual Conference programme gives information about local accommodation if you wish to stay.
